GRAYSCALE Q&A's
with D. Syphe, Creative Director of Fashion, Grayscale Society
Q: Describe Grayscale fashion?
A: The Grayscale man is definitely a man that pays attention to the trends. He is equally as stylish in street wear as he is in business attire. Although he is on top of trends, he chooses which to follow carefully, and incorporates them with timeless, classic pieces.
Q: Where does Grayscale fashion draw its inspiration?
A: As fashion editor I definitely pay attention to the Menswear shows each season. I look at what is being presented and select the trends that fit our aesthetic. My experience as a fashion stylist comes in handy when researching trends because it allows me to examine each look by individual pieces, vs. judging the entire ensemble. For example, if floral prints are in this season, Dolce & Gabanna may present an entire floral print suit paired with a matching shirt on the runway; naturally that is a bit extreme for most. With a stylist eye, I am able to evaluate the look by each piece and say, “I will feature the floral jacket with solid pants” etc… Allowing the Grayscale man to be comfortable yet on trend is always the goal. I also search through blogs and a few of my trusted, favorite shopping websites.
Q: What is your experience in the fashion industry?
A: I’ve been designing clothes since I was about twelve years old. At one point in life, I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else! I went to Philadelphia University and studied Fashion Design & Marketing. I worked as an assistant to an amazing fashion stylist, Ms. Mo McKenzie, before venturing out on my own. So I guess you could say that fashion has always been my “thing”.
Q: What celebrity would you consider to be a Grayscale man?
A: Hmmm, I’ve never really thought about that. The Grayscale team is pretty fly! From our CEO, The Grayone, to the rest of the team; WE DRESS. So whenever I consider the Grayscale man, I am not really looking to Hollywood, I just look to my left and my right. I look to the team, and think “Oh this would be fly on him!” or “How could I make such and such comfortable wearing this trend?” I am pretty blessed to have my inspiration around me and working with me.
Q: What can we expect to see from Grayscale Society?
A: The purpose of Grayscale Society is to blur the line between black and white and create that gray area, the space that is neither completely urban nor totally corporate or preppy. You will see distressed denim and Yeezy sweatshirts in one post, and Armani suits with Hermes ties in the next. The Grayscale man has a multi-faceted personality and is not afraid to express those different dimensions of himself through his dress.
Q: Lastly, will we be seeing some of your design work on the site? & Will you be offering a Grayscale line?
A: Yes we will be offering some Grayscale couture on the site! We will begin with a classic Tee, just to build momentum and allow our followers to show their love and support to the Grayscale movement. I am actually working on a Grayscale Varsity Jacket for our VIP’s, as well as a few other items; maybe a sweatshirt, elongated T, skullies and caps. But yes, there will be product and yes I will be designing some of these items along with The Grayone. But as for designing an entire line??? That may be somewhere in the cards, down the line. We are just allowing the universe to lead the way and we plan on walking through any doors that God opens.
